Chris Spealler placed 1st Overall at the Great Basin Regional Qualifiers by winning all three workouts.
This video shows highlights from his second workout. Of interest to many will be how many judges there were watching his movements. He has several reps not counted for one reason or another. His mental game is top notch, and he continues to push through no matter how fair (or not) he believes the counting is.
After the workout, Chris talks about his experience during the workout.

For anyone who missed their Regional, are overseas, or just barely missed qualifying at their regional, there will be one last chance to qualify for the Games.
At some point near the end of May, a workout format will be announced. You will have two days to complete the workouts under strict guidelines that will be clearly established at the time of the announcement. You must time and film your efforts also under strict guidelines that will be clearly established.
Make sure you know how to capture and submit the video (or connect with someone who does). No late entries will be accepted. The CrossFit HQ staff will judge the video and determine the legitimacy of the time.
The number of spots available for men and women will depend on a number of factors, and will be announced later.
There is nothing to do now. This is only an announcement that the opportunity will be there. More information to follow over the coming weeks.

GSX Athletics is honored to have been selected to host this weekend's CrossFit Games Southwest Regional Qualifier. Our team has stepped up to the challenge of staging a fair, exciting, and safe event that will stand as a legitimate test of fitness. Three workouts have been carefully selected to challenge our competitors capacities from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Missouri. Administered correctly, and collectively, this thing is anyone's to win.
Furthermore, this event will serve to embrace our great local CrossFit Community, and showcase our region's finest and fittest men and women. Each hoping to earn a qualifying position to the CrossFit Games in July.
We have collectively hand built a structure to serve our CrossFit Community, CrossFit HQ, and future folks who want to change their lives for the better with real .
Welcome to Hell's Half Acre!
There is a lot of attention being given to the spread of swine flu in Texas. At this point, the CDC is not requiring the postponement or cancellation of public events, so we intend to proceed as normal for the Qualifier.
It is, however, the recommendation of the Region's director that anyone who has been sick in the last 48 hours, or had any symptoms of influenza or swine influenza such as fever, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, runny nose and body aches that they contact their doctor immediately. We also suggest that they do not attend the Hell's Half Acre qualifier for safety reasons and the threat of the disease spread in our area.
The health department recommends regular hand washing, and hand wash gel will be widely available at the Qualifier.
Please continue to check this site and the Regional site for updates.

In a super-secret testing of the NorCal Workout 2 a couple weeks ago, Pat Barber gave it a shot to see what would happen. The current requirements are a minimum of 10 reps of each, but when Pat did it, they required a minimum of 20 reps of each.
The workout is:
Max reps in 10 minutes of:
Muscle-Up
Ground-to-Shoulder (Male: 185#, Female: 105#)
Pat did 5 reps of each, back and forth, until he reached 20 each, and then he started emphasizing the cleans. He finished with 63 total reps (25 Muscle-Ups and 38 Cleans). He says now that if he was going to do it again, he'd focus on the cleans even more with the 10 rep minimum.

Erin Cianciolo, currently in 10th place after Day 1, during Workout 2 of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Qualifiers.
The workout for Day 2 has been announced. It will be:
Three rounds, 21-15- and 9 reps, for time of:
95 pound Squat snatch (65 pounds for women)
Chest to bar Pull-ups
The barbell must begin on the ground. The bar must be jumped to overhead in a single motion. At some point, the crease of the hips must pass below the knee. The most efficient way to perform this is to catch in a full squat and stand. But, a power snatch followed by an overhead squat is considered legit.
Any and all kips are allowed on the pullups so long as full extension is reached at the bottom and the chest comes into contact with the bar.
Jeff Tincher explains the standards of movement for the workout in this video ... [wmv] [mov]

Chris Spealler won all three workouts, the final one more than four minutes quicker than the closest competitor Zachary Forrest, who ended up third overall. Chris, Zachary and Eric O'Connor (who won the run at last years' Games) will be heading to Aromas for the 09 Games.
Hillari Eaton (pictured) won the women's competition, with the top finish in both the second and third workouts (she got fourth in the first workout). She and Lisa Ray were the only women to complete all three workouts as Rx'd.
Cyndi Frieling came in third. She won the first workout and got fourth in the final workout. She scaled the second workout. The way they scored the event was 0 points for scaled workouts or workouts that didn't get completed in the allotted time. Cyndi's 189 points from the first and final workouts were enough to earn her a trip to Aromas.
Congratulations to all six athletes! Specific athlete profiles will be coming in over the next couple weeks.

Speal is competing today in the Great Basin Regional Qualifiers. Sevan caught up to him last night and asked him about his training and perspective on this year's competitions.
Speal came in 10th overall last year. He was first going into the final event, which was the 30 reps of squat clean and jerk at 155lbs. That's a massive load for someone who weighs 135lbs.
Since then, Speal has been training hard. He has gained about 5lbs, is much stronger, and still as fast (if not faster).

The European Regional Qualifiers took place last weekend. Mikko Salo, Brian Bowen, and James Crichton qualified to come to Aromas in July. No women qualified, which means there is an unbelievable opportunity in Europe, not just for female CrossFitters but also for all the European affiliates to distinguish themselves for the Games '10.
The workouts were:
3 rounds for time,
400m run
21 Kettlebell Swings (m:32kg, w:20kg)
12 Chest-to-Bar Pull-Ups
15-12-9 reps for time,
Clean & Jerk (overhead anyhow) - m:60kg, w:40kg
Handstand Push-Ups
As Many Rounds As Possible in 20 mins of:
250m row
10 Burpees (8ft target)
10 Ring Dips (shoulder below elbow)
They write this of the event:
Although the field of athletes was only small the quality was extremely high. Three challenging workouts probed each athlete's fitness looking for weakness. Some facets of fitness were found wanting but there was no such lack of passion, commitment or sportsmanship.
Approaching the end of any workout it was hard to believe that there were less than 80 people in the building. The CrossFit Northern Ireland facility seemed to be bursting at the seams. The first time most of the athletes, volunteers and supporters had met but I have seen no finer example of CrossFit community than this weekend's event.

The Australasian Qualifiers took place this past weekend (April 4-5, 2009). Steve Willis and Chris Hogan qualified for the men. Tamaryn Venter and Nadine Burns qualified for the women. Congratulations to them all!
Mick Shaw from CrossFit Effects writes this of the event:
It's been a great weekend and I believe that the two guys and two girls deserve to represent this region at the CrossFit Games.
We made the standards for range of movement very strict. We had judges from all over Australia, and a couple of them let certain athletes get away with bad form. I told all the athletes at the beginning that if they did not complete the workout as required, they would have to do it again. After reviewing one woman's workout, I decided to give her the option to take the 15min timeout option or redo the workout. She had 30min to decide. She chose to redo the workout, and four other women joined her.
Chris Hogan was a dark horse who came through very strong.
