Anyone who witnessed the performance of Finnish national Mikko Salo at this years CrossFit Games may be surprised to discover that he was reluctant to compete at all.
We sent Sevan and Carey to Ireland and Finland to find out more about the world's fittest man. In an interview conducted at his first Level One Certification, Mikko returns to the location of his qualifier at Crossfit Elite 400 in Northern Ireland and recounts his journey to becoming the champ.
"I am not so competitive of a person," He says, still slightly out of breath from the 2:16 Fran that he completed moments ago,"but he (my coach) told me that we could manage here and get to the games, and then I decided to come... it was a good decision." His conclusion is supported by an amazing performance at this years games.
He doesn't even pause when he is asked about his weaknesses entering the qualifier, "The double unders, firstly, I know my metcon condition is good and my power levels are good, but I have some big issues. Like snatch and double unders." These shortcomings hardly hindered his progress towards the podium in Aromas. He snatched 190 pounds and recorded the fastest time of the day in the chipper event.
Although he is happy with his performance at the Games he is not one to rest on his laurels. "I have been training hard, next year I want to be a better CrossFitter."
