Games09_OPTGHDTriplet.jpgJames OPT Fitzgerald made peace with the new nature of his contribution to the Games in 2009 as an organizer, rather than an athlete. While extremely difficult for his athletic ambitions, the move was necessary in his mind to ensure the Canada West Qualifier best represented CrossFit and that appropriate standards were met.

OPT was the champion in 2007 and took 12th place last year. With such competitive statistics, it was a difficult pill for him to swallow.

"Honestly, I was OK with it," he said on day one of the 2009 competition. "I had planned on taking the whole year off and cycling in."

That was back in May. In a fortunate turn of events, OPT did make it to the competition and did exceptionally well. "Honestly I felt like I owed it to the community...This year I'm just here for the experience."

Whether or not you choose to compete you are a huge contribution to this community. Simply look at the great quality of athletes that came from the Qualifiers you organized. That along with your performances proves what ever you decide to do, it will be great!

I look forward to seeing you again.

100% class act. If you watched "every second counts" then you know what I mean. He truly sees what Crossfit represents in the big picture. If aliens show up tomorrow & ask about Crossfit we would give them Coach G & OPT. A representative of the sport is unjust...OPT is an ambassador!

OPT is an ambassador and very smart for bowing out of the competition he was organizing. I have said it once and I will say it again, if you are organizing a crossfit competition then you should NOT be allowed to COMPETE in it. Being in a competition that you have created the wods for WILL bring up controversy, PERIOD. If there is no other way that the organizer can qualify for a regional or the crossfit games then they should send a list of equipment they have available for the comp to HQ and let HQ make up the WODS for that competition.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WAY TO GO OPT. Setting the standard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
