C2GivesTanyaRower.jpgFollowing this year's CrossFit Games, Concept 2 graciously invited this year's top male and female competitors, Mikko Salo and Tanya Wagner, to the CRASH-B's, the world indoor rowing championships. They could come as special guests of C2 to watch, or if they wanted to compete, C2 would send two of the world's best coaches to train them to compete in the event. Guess which one they did!

Over 2,000 rowers are expected to come from all over the world to participate in the largest indoor rowing race of the year. It is likely that specialists in the field will dominate the event, but we are excited to see how proficiently our athletes can perform on limited experience.

So far, so good. Tanya smashed all the women's records for Angela Hart's rowing seminar practice drills. Mikko recently did a rowing workout on the same day he performed the 2:16 Fran. The workout was five 1000m splits, with just a 3min rest in between each split. His times were 3:15, 3:15, 3:15, 3:18, and 3:17. Not too shabby for a guy 5'8" and 176lbs.

To return the favor, we have invited the top eligible male and female winners of the CRASH-Bs to compete in their Regional Qualifier for the 2010 Games. We say eligible because the true winners are likely to be competitive rowers, and the Games season coincides with their rowing season (which is why the CRASH-Bs are in Feb, not June). We are going to send them to a local affiliate to prepare before heading out into the most competitive CrossFit arenas.

The following is a letter from Tracy Desrocher of Concept 2, explaining the details of the exchange and updating the progress of Mikko and Tanya:

We are so psyched to hear back from both Mikko Salo and Tanya Wagner that they will be participating in the 2010 C.R.A.S.H.-B. event. It will be such an experience for the rowing community to meet some of CrossFit's finest and learn from them.

Concept2 and members of the rowing community are standing by to offer their help on how to best train for the CRASH-B competition. Likewise Mikko, Tanya and the participating CrossFit community will be cheering on their best and offering their own expertise on how best to use CrossFit for a rowing competition. Everyone benefits by bringing these two communities together.

So what happens now? Tanya's journey will start in Boston where she will participate in the CrossFit Rowing Foundations course. CrossFit Boston will host the first day of CrossFit Certification, concentrating on indoor rowing technique and training. Community Rowing Boathouse will offer their facility on day two, in order to provide CrossFit participants an opportunity to row on the water in shells.

Mikko will be working with Concept2's dealer in Finland, Veikko Sinisalo. Veikko rowed in the 1987 and 1988 World Championships for Finland, in the lightweight coxless four. He has been coaching for many years, and at the Beijing Olympics, he coached the Finland Lightweight women's double to Silver medal. He is currently coaching the Czech national rowing team.

After both Tanya and Mikko have completed their one-on-one trainings, Concept2 has established a blog on the CrossFit Page of C2's website called Countdown to CRASH-B's. The community can stay updated through the blog, which will be maintained by Concept2 instructors, coaches and elite members of the Rowing community. It is my vision, that as the Rowing world posts its ideas of how to best prepare for an event like the 2000 Meter piece, the CrossFit community will react, by incorporating their thoughts on how to train for an event like this.

So I blast out one more thank you to the CrossFit Community for sharing such treasures with the world of rowing, and I invite any and all of you to follow Mikko and Tanya's Countdown to CRASH-B's.

Ha! Tanya, I did not say that!! Web is just trying to stir up some competitive drama. I will save my competition against you for Aromas. I very much enjoy the friendly, pen-pal relationship we have. :)

So glad to hear you are going through with this! You will rock it and I'll be rooting for ya. Good luck!

Coming from the rowing community and now a part of the CrossFit community I am very excited for this! These are two great communities and it is fun to see them interact and work so well together.

Very cool. Mikko and Tanya are really impressive and I would love to see how they stack up against the elite in the rowing world.

The World Record for lightweight men (165lbs and under) is 5:58.5. He held 500m splits of 1:28.6, 1:30.6, 1:30.7, 1:28.4... ouch.

The record for the big boys is 5:36.6 (avg 500m split 1:24.15). For hvywt women it's 6:28.4 (1:37 per 500m) and the record for lightweight betty's (under 135lbs) is 6:56.7 (1:44.17).

Good luck in Boston. With your athletic skills, I'm sure you both will represent.

This is such an exciting opportunity! Thank you Concept 2 for your generosity and support in helping us prepare for CRASH-B's. It's going to be an incredible weekend. I'm really looking forward to it! I also can't wait to see Mikko kill he even human?

It's so nice to know we have support from our CrossFit community. I really do appreciate it, and know it will be much needed since pukie-the-clown typically accompanies me on the rowing machine :)

Lindsey, I really thought Web was serious...are you sure you don't want to join in the fun?!? What better time than now to hit that rowing fran. I'll do yours this time and let you know.

I am trying to convince her to pursue it! It would be a lot of fun to train for something so outside of the box, right now.
