Joy Nguyen is pictured winning Workout 3 with a successful lift of 155lbs.

The Western Canada Qualifier held at CrossFit Calgary this past weekend was rocking- with 64 athletes, 200 spectators, and 45 volunteers crammed into a 2,000 square foot space the energy was unlike ever felt before. There was some very tight competition (the final female Games spot went to a tiebreaker and the top 3 men were separated by 4 points) and plenty of sweat, blood and tears (in that order).

There was a whisper in the Calgary winds that a CrossFit robot had been sent from Vancouver on a seek-and-destroy mission. That robot is Joy Nguyen. She finished in the top spot, overcoming some tough moments and a near disaster on Sunday. In the first WOD "Every rep counts" Joy was edged out by 16 year-old Katy Josephs by 1 rep for the WOD win. Lauren Pryor finished 7 reps behind Joy for 3rd place, positioning the former track athlete to potentially overtake the leaders in WOD2 "The Kanadian", a 1K run.

Congratulations to all competitors! That was one of the best weekends I have ever spent surrounded by some amazing athletes. Everyone put everything they had into each and every second of their performances.

That was a weekend I will never forget! Finishing the competition tied for 3rd was tough to swallow, but it happened for a reason... I will not be slowed down. I will be back faster and stronger!

Big dawg howl... you really rocked it this weekend and the huge cheers and team support amongst was amazing.

Now that was an amazingly written story on what went down here in Calgary. All the athletes involved deserve huge respect. Everyone was very humble and down to earth.

Training with Joy is amazing, she makes everyone around her better. Watching that last C&J was incredible. She's going to rock it in Aromas.

It was an incredible honour to workout with some amazing athletes this weekend! We sent 5 girls from CrossFit Regina and had a great experience. CrossFit Calgary was a great host, extremely well organized. This moment where Joy got this lift was one of the most memorable moments!

Awesome photo!!! Every competitor, spectator, judge, and coordinator felt chills when Joy made that lift. The energy was insane when she locked it out. Her post lift reaction was a moment I will never forget. I'm not sure how she would decribe it, but it had to have been a defining moment.

What a super weekend! A HUGE congrats to all the AMAZING athletes representing Western Canada-you will be a force to be reckoned with!!! CFC/OPT team put on a first class event.

I certainly owe Joy N a huge personal thanks as well...lucky for me, our 3rd lifts were at the same time-I didnt know what was going on with her at the time but her energy and that of the crazy crowd at CrossFit Calgary HQ's helped me achieve a +17.5 lbs pb as well! So Thank you Very Much and GOOD LUCK to you in Aromas-we wil all be cheering you on!!

Joy is amazing and totally humble. I think she has a real chance to win it all in Aromas, the girl is just so tough and determined. Her numbers are incredible but I don't want to give too much away because we are still trying to keep her our "Secret" weapon from the North. Can't wait to see what she does in July.
