Chris Spealler from CrossFit Park City in Park City, Utah is without a doubt one of CrossFit's most extraordinary athletes. Chris was in first place after the end of the first day of the 08 Games. His lead over second place was bigger than the difference between 2nd and 11th places.

He had the best time in the Thruster/Pull-up workout, second best time in the Run, and fourth best time in the Deadlift/Burpee workout. There was not another male athlete in the top five for even two of these events. Tanya Wagner also finished top five in all three (4th, 4th, and 5th, respectively).

Chris weighs 135lbs, which put him at a disadvantage for the 155lb squat clean and jerk workout on Sunday (compare that to Khalipa's 210lb frame). He finished 10th overall in 08 and 4th overall in 07.

He'll be competing in the Great Basin Regional Qualifier.

That dude is nuclear! Bodyweight and height play an interesting role in these workouts. I don't know the science behind bodyweight/power/strength calculations but I often wonder if having weight classes would be justified. I weigh in at 250. 30 clean and jerks with 250 lbs. would crush me. Best of luck in 09 Chris!

Finally, a number on Kallipa's weight. I was figuring he was bigger than Everett possibly 200 last year and now it's confirmed.

I was just blown away by Chris' 1st day performance at the Games, it was like he was just at this level no one else could touch. My goal was to stay as close to him on the run as possible for as long as possible; that didn't work out so well but I think it helped my time overall!

Hey Chris,

Carey and I are coming to your hood to film the Great Basin Qualifier and hope to come back to Park City and get a peek into the life of the greatest living CrossFitter.

My morning routine:
1) go to CFHQ main site
2) open comments
3) hit CTRL+F
4) type "speal"
5) whatever his time is - double it for everyone else

Good luck at the qualifier Chris!

Truly an awesome athlete. If you think his videos are insane, you should see him in person. Last year's Games looked like you were watching him in fast forward right before your eyes...incredible! Best of luck this year!!!

i think they should either:
a)create weight divisions or
b)prescribe weights based off of percentage bodyweight

either way, clearly mr. spealler would finish leaps and bounds in front of any other Crossfitter!

How do you suggest scaling pullups and other exercises where low bodyweight is beneficial then? Every advantage is a disadvantage in Crossfit. The idea is to be good at everything. At what bodyweight you decide to attempt that is up to you.

Weight division, % of BW, age division, blah blahblahblahbalh

look, nearly EVERYONE can crossfit, the Crossfit Games is a separate entity... not everyone has the genetics and hard work to make it. Sorry, you might just not make the MLB or NFL, but you can still play baseball in your local league.

Perhaps in a few years, when numbers are really getting big you'll see weight or age divisions. It depends if they want to take that route.

Don't know if I agree on whether or not weight classes would be beneficial, but the pull up analogy is a bit poor. He was saying that the weight for movements should be relative to your bodyweight. Jamie, pullups wouldn't need to be scaled seeing as they ALREADY are fit to those guidelines by nature of the movment. The reverse of your logic is actually the case: if all competitors are forced to move the same amount of weight, than to keep it consistent all competitors should be forced to do a pullup with the same resistance.

Bad logic inherehent on this board aside, you are an awesome and inspiring athlete Speal, good luck this year.

He is definitely quite an athlete. It will be fun to watch him this year.

But I'd have to disagree with the weight class idea since it goes against the very idea of CrossFit. In real life there are no weight classes, you have to deal with the situation. The variety of CF workouts favors no body types. In certain workouts, you're simply at a disadvantage. If this workout was CINDY, speal would probably have beaten Khalipa. I believe most competitors would agree that the no weight classes/generic workouts for all competitors makes for a better indication of who is the most fit person in the world. Keep in mind that that is the goal of the CF games. Not to see who can C+J the biggest % of their bodyweight.

I have never had the pleasure of meeting Chris Spealler. But he is definitely an athlete that I have admired. Hands down, I believe Spealler is the best all around athlete in Crossfit. I would love to see him win the 2009 games.

For the run it was 50 cent, In Da Club... (did I just write Da)? I like the beat.

For the clean and jerk it was Jars of Clay, God will lift up your head. Yeah a bit different but I knew it was going to be a nasty wod for me and needed my head in the right place that much more.

You're pretty much gauranteed some kind of hip/hop on my headphones just because I like the beat.

If I was betting money - to pick one CrossFitter, to do one UNKNOWN event.

It would have to be Da Spealler. Every time.

If there were weight classes, then we'd be talking about Spealler vs The Big Guy... and speculating who is better. Let's avoid speculation and lets just crown the fittest human.

And right now, that is Jason Khalipa, the Fittest Man on the Planet. 2009 CrossFit Games Champion. King KONG bad ass mofo. The gorilla in a human suit. A rare and gifted physical specimen who performed to GAMES STANDARD!
