The Midwest Regional Qualifiers are over and the final results are here. Bill Henniger reflects on the event:

Day one was brutal.

We started the day off with heavy deads and chest to bar pullups. The intensity was off the charts and the competition was insane with blood and chalk on the ground. Sarah Dunsmore at 5:38 and Alan Moore with 5:29 killed the WOD nicknamed "The Mule". The Mule knocked out some of the competition in the women's field but the remaining females were tough as nails.

The next WOD was the Kettlebell Thruster/Burpee workout, which proved to be an interesting challenge. Sarah Dunsmore at 5:58 and Simon Warnos with 4:39 bulled their way through to achieve the winning times. The competition was right at their heels with a strong showing from CrossFit Troy, Bragg and Durham bringing some pipehitters.

The third and final WOD was the 2K row, sounds simple but it is a killer. At this point it was straight heart driving the athletes through the end of the day. Ben Carter pulled a 6:44 with the rain hitting mid 2K, it was something to be seen. Zoe Metro of Hyperfit took the women's heat with a 7:55 and Dawn Hutchinson was only a second behind.

On to day 2:
Simon started the day with a two second lead and Sarah with a 2:41 lead. Out of the number four slot came Graham Spagnola and he was on a mission. He pushed through with a 6:51 time taking the lead and the rest of the pack wasn't far behind. Watching this heat was like watching battle, people were climbing the rafters to see the final heat. Dane Youtz won the heat with a 6:48. With a little more work, this guy is one to watch.

Dawn Hutchinson murdered the workout with a 7:50 which set her place at number four. Feng Yi Chew moved quietly throughout the competition and creeped close to Sarah and ended up in the second place slot. Sarah Dunsmore held the lead to secure her number one position.

Shana Duvall finished the WOD with the entire crowd going crazy, she power snatched 75lbs - 30 times which was very close to her PR for a single rep squat snatch.

Overall, as we've seen frequently, the competitors, spectators and judges were top notch. The competition was brutal but the sportsmanship was amazing.

Congrats Ben Carter. You made Derby City CrossFit so proud today. Your dream was to just make it to Sunday and you kicked butt and punched your ticket to the games. Great heart was shown from all and the CrossFit community is strong. Great weekend put on by Rogue Fitness as well.

Great times indeed. I did these wod's the other day and was beaten up afterwards. I want to make sure that I had the KB thruster/Burpee workout correct. Was it 53# in each hand? And was it 5 rounds? Thanks for any help and congrats to the winners.

I had a blast at the mid west regional this weekend. Caity and Bill ran a tight ship all the judges were awesome. I may be bias but i think the winner of this years games will come from the mid west qualifier.

Also, all of the awesome people from the Cleveland area... so many names I can hardly remember... Carl, Kate, Travis, Luke.. big Asian guy:), and all the rest of you.. can't wait to hit some wods with yall when I go back to Ctown.

Great atmosphere and a great time... wouldn't want to spend these past 2 days doin anything else.

Feng & Matt:

Sorry about the quick writeup and mistakes. I am certain all that attended can understand it was a long weekend.

Very well done to all that put themselves out there and made it through the Gauntlet.

Just wanted to say congratulations to everyone who participated in this qualifier; win or lose everyone showed a lot of heart. I was there merely as a spectator, but I wanted to log on here to note how much I love the Crossfit community. The community and the people who participate still continue to amaze me. I saw many, many men and women pick themselves up off of the mats after the Sunday WOD to cheer on their Crossfit brothers and sisters, and I also saw exhausted strangers hugging post WOD even though they may have been disappointed with their personal performance. The Midwest workouts were some of the toughest posted, and everyone who finished should pat themselves on the back. Good luck to those who move on to California, we will be rooting for you.

What an event and the brother/sisterhood was just amazing.

Weather was awesome and that crazy downpoor at the end of the heat 5 row made it that much better.

"Every Second Counts" was the truth and boy did that first workout destroy people.

It should have been called the ripped fest because I don't think anyone left that first workout with skin left on their hands.

Congrats to everyone and my boy Graham Holmberg.

We'll work on Dane's pull ups and hopefully get him in on the last chance workout because that kid is insane and very very raw.

Great job Rogue!

I agree Michelle. This was an amazing event to be a part of! Thanks to Caity and Bill for making everything go so smoothly. I think everyone was impressed with the organization. And those WODs were killer.

I also want to say that I had a great time working out with all the women who competed. Yall are wonderful. I believe I'll be seeing a lot of you soon in good ol NC.

Big shout to all of my folks at Crossfit Durham. Couldn't have made it without you all!

I was a spectator this weekend and I just wanted to comment on some of the amazing performances. Feng was so much fun to watch as she methodically and quickly made her way through all the WODs. And Dawn from Wilmington blew those 30 snatches out of the water on Sunday like she was tossing up a PVC pipe. Nice work! This weekend was fantastic. Congratulations to everyone.

May 18, 2009 6:45 AM

What an awesome weekend! The whole Rogue staff put on a great show and kept everything running smoothly. Even a freak thunderstorm couldn't put a dent in the day. Congrats to all the competitors. The Games have some seriously strong athletes from the MidWest Region!

Good luck to all!

Kudos to Bill and Caity, as well as all the judges and volunteers, at the Midwest Regionals this past weekend! They kept everything running without a hitch. All the heats started on time, logistics were fully in place (I do love me my chalk), and most of all, everyone was determined to make this event a success.

I had an incredible time meeting new folks and competing against the best athletes from the region. I was blown away by the camaraderie and sportsmanship displayed throughout the time. Shana -- your perseverance was truly inspiring. That, to me, is a HUGE part of CrossFit.

And to the girls from NC (Sarah, Caroline, Dawn, Michelle), as well as Chastity from Troy, OH -- it was an honor to meet all of you. We should definitely get together to train so that we can tear it up by bringing the best of the Midwest to Aromas in July!

Thank you to Bill and the entire staff of volunteers and workers. This event was planned very well and ran smoothly. That is a hard thing to do and you guys made it look easy. The people in this community are awesome! This past weekend was a great experience.

Becky N, I agree with you about Dawn. That was one of the highlights of the competition. She came back from the 400 and started with the snatch, the place went nuts!

I watched this from afar via smart phone reports. I also heard Feng won WOD #2 with a time of 5:45. That's not to take anything away from Sarah who won the overall. The battle was just more epic than reported with straight wins for Sarah here.

It sounded like a great competition and a real survival of the fittest on the women's side.

Yes, that is absolutely right. Feng definitely came in 1st on WOD #2. Bill noted that above, but I wanted to mention it as well. Also, Feng is a RIDICULOUS athlete! I had so much fun competing alongside her. Can't wait to see you throw down in Aromas, Feng!

I noticed that some of the qualifiers from this region did not have affiliates besides their names. Is this because they did not come from an affiliate? Or was it just accidentally left off? Have there been any qualifiers who did not work out at an affiliate?

With CrossFit being so accesible I think you get a lot of people with normal gym memberships that are driven enough to do it by themselves.....?
