Northwest CrossFit has claimed first place overall in the Affiliate Cup after completing the hill run in 11:27 (third overall) and registering a low score of 18.

Because Northwest is five points ahead of second-place Central, the team is all but assured of the overall Affiliate Cup title on Sunday, even if it places last of the five teams in the final WOD. If Northwest doesn't finish the workout, the title is up for grabs.

CrossFit NorCal finished third on the strength of a first-place finish in the OHS/pull-up WOD. Crossfit Invictus from San Diego slipped to fourth after a spirited third WOD in the afternoon heat of the Stadium, while Oregon CrossFit finished fifth after posting a stellar 11:09 (first overall) on the trail run.

Northwest's lowest placing was 11th in the OHS/pull-up WOD, but the outfit--Paul Zavaglia, Zak Middleton, Alek Vlaski, Lindsey Dion, Amanda Barelli and Laura Asbell--finished third in the run and fourth in the Stadium WOD. A diverse group that proves specialization is the enemy, the team features a former rugby/football player (Zavaglia), a tennis pro (Vlaski), a cyclist/track athlete (Barelli) and a basketball player (Dion).

Last year's winner, CrossFit Oakland, placed 43rd, while the 2007 champion, CrossFit Santa Cruz, finished 17th.

The top international team was CrossFit Calgary (13th).

The final WOD has not been announced as of press time but is scheduled for release Saturday night or Sunday morning.

Guess Sunday's WOD doesnt matter for any of the teams. It would seem as though there can be no change in the rankings.

As I mentioned when the scoring was announced, if places on day 2 are worth the same as day 1, then yes the places cannot change based on the current point spread. I noticed this and pointed out that going all out day 1 would be more beneficial than on day 2, where the pack is smaller and the points you get for finishing last are much lower. This is true of the individual competition as well.

One way to address this is to make day 2 workouts worth 2x or 3x the points or some higher multiplier. Alternatively, the points can be wiped clean for day 2 and final finishing order is based on performance in the day 2 wod by the remaining finalists.

First off, Great job by all affiliates today. What a great display of athleticism and teamwork.

Second, great job by Crossfit HQ in coming up with three excellent workouts.

BUT.....

The system is flawed. If all the affiliate finish the final workout on Sunday no places will change at all. Something needs to be done, since perhaps this scenario wasn't quite thought out. I believe in rewarding the top team and them having an advantage. Perhaps re-seed the teams with first having one point second having two points etc and then the order of the final WOD being added to their total. I would just like to see the final workout actually have some meaning for the individuals who busted their butts on Friday to get to Sunday.

#26: Just because someone typed "all but decided" on the website doesnt mean it's already over. There's no telling what kind of WOD is set for Sunday. What if it's 50-40-30-20-10? Think every team can finish that?

Is it unlikely the standings will change? Maybe, but who thought Khalipa was going to win on the last workout last year? Did Jeremy Thiel give up on the last workout either?

It's never over till it's over.

Way to gut it out NW Crossfit. These WODs require so much heart, athleticism, and all out effort. Amongst so many fine athletes, way to leave it all on the field. Looks like ya'll found your angry place. Beers when you get home!

Awesome job CrossFit Central! I have only been working out at CrossFit Central for a short time (7 weeks), but it has been incredible. Seeing the way the Gym is run, the intensity of the clients, and the excellence of the coaches, I thought CrossFit Central would do well in both the team and individual events. So far so good. Your effort and placement in the team competition is inspiring.

I don't follow your analogy between Khalipha's victory last year and the final affiliate WOD Sunday.
Khalipha won in a true wide open winner take all WOD event.
The only 'suspense' Sunday will be if any 1(or 2?) of the 5 strongest teams of all 99 may not complete the WOD ?...kind of an odd thing to root for.

I had the pleasure of doing my CF intro classes and kipping seminar with Brett Marshall (AFT) last summer before I moved away and also had the chance to meet Michael Fitzgerald and Gord, great group of people and I look forward to hopefully training at CFC when I am back in Calgary later this summer.

Let's be honest. Whoever created this system should be embarrassed. The idea that 2-5 have basically no shot to win this is ridiculous. The WODs were great, but the system is clearly flawed.
