BozCastroEvent5Snatch.jpgThe first day of the 09 CrossFit Games tested athletes' physical and mental boundaries to an unprecedented degree. After four events, twenty men and twenty women had already been eliminated.

Now, "in one 20 minute event, 39 people are gonna be eliminated," reiterated Dave Castro, Director of the CrossFit Games.

The final event was a CrossFit couplet. Tough under any circumstances, brutal as the fifth workout of the day, and crucial for staying alive in the competition. Thirteen men and fifteen women would not finish within the allotted time. Carey Kepler had the best time for women at 11:01. Jason Khalipa had the best time for men at 11:18.

Three rounds for time of:
30 Wallball (20lbs/14lbs)
30 Hang squat snatches (75lbs/45lbs)

Castro briefed the event as Adrian Bozeman demonstrated the points of performance. Athletes had to finish the movement with control of the weight overhead. BrOPT (Michael Fitzgerald), who finished 34th in the event with a time of 18:16, was forced to redo his last repetition. His struggle for one final repetition in the midst of extreme muscle cramping is indicative of the mental fortitude these athletes possess. BrOPT finished Day 1 in 16th place, just good enough to make it to Day 2. In the end, he finished 11th overall.

BrOPT getting up and doing that last rep was one of the most amazing things I witnessed at the Games. Just incredible!!

Also, are the folks with the cameras and mikes afraid of women or something? How come we don't see any interviews with the women? I am so looking forward to the complete Games movie, just hope it's not like Every Second Counts and just focused on the male athletes. These women are just as bad ass as the men!

No! We have tons of footage of the women, and it's just about to roll out. In fact, most of the editing of the entire event has been completed and you are about to see increasing quantities of our best stuff all over the CrossFit domains.

Stay tuned!

That video of Mike was awesome. I love how the other athletes that were done were cheering him on.

Finish your reps, kids!

Unreal video. I can't even imagine getting up for that final rep. Thinking you're done and trying to find your happy place...and then you're told you have to do one more. Brutal.

Love this sh*t. Keep the vids comin...they get me through the work day!

On the first video, both links point to MOV files; on the second, the link to the WMV is a little garbled.

great video. I hear that sound often coming from him at OPT's place. That's some effort and good to spot the other's like DJ and Andy cheering on. On a side note though...what was the rules as watching the fellow just out of screen and he was never starting from the ground on his reps

Hi Trevor,

The other video (http://media.crossfit.com/cf-video/Games09_Event5.mov)
explains the rules and range of motion.

Loved that video. Mike has trained with us a few times and is a great athlete and awesome guy.

I've done that workout on its own and it is brutal ... can't imagine doing it after those four other workouts that day.
