Games08_SundayMensHeat.jpgAfter months of planning, dozens of successful and highly competitive regional qualifiers, and a healthy dose of speculation, we are proud to announce the official list of the 2009 CrossFit Games competitors.

This is the first year that everyone participating had to qualify first. There is no doubt that the competition this year will the hottest ever.

There are 75 women and 77 men coming to Aromas, along with 99 affiliate teams. Friday, July 10th will be the open affiliate competition. Saturday, July 11th will be the open individual competition. Sunday, July 12th will be the finals for the Affiliate Cup, plus the Men's and Women's individual championships.

Is it a typo that there is a Bill Pappas on the female list?
Or is that short for willhelmina?
I'm just sayin'.

It's really great to see the names we've been reading about for the last few months. We've also seen their capabilities so our expectations for the games is sky-high right now. Personally, I can hardly wait.

Looks like a great group of competitors, I'm excited to see what type of performances they put put.

I thought that OPT decided not to compete? does anyone know how he qualified? An athlete like him deserves to be there, I'm just curious after all we heard about him deciding not to compete in the Canada west qualifier

I am very honored to be on such an amazing list. After placing 79th last year, being among this group of elite athletes is mind blowing! Great Job to all who have battled for these spots and those who pushed us to get here! Crossfit is both empowering and humbling smashed together....what could be better? See you all in Aromas!

Cool, OPT's going to be there.

Bainbridges aren't going to be there huh? That's a shame, I think (my opinion anyhow) they most likely would have qualified at any of the other regionals. Next year we should just have each region write workouts for someone else's region. No muss, no fuss, no complaining about supposedly rigged workouts, and everyone can compete.

OPT qualified because as a previous winner, he got an automatic place I believe. He is a great inspiration to the crossfit community and glad to see he will be competing alongside his little brother.

Leo decided to withdrawl his position. They experienced a recent influx into their affiliate and as such he felt his priority needed to be to his clients (new and old) and his business. Just wasn't the right time for him to "step away" for a week.

It is a shame as he would have been a great competitor but it is great to see that their affiliate is flourishing.

(Hope I didn't put words in your mouth Leo)

So those people that qualified and then withdrew... were they replaced by the people in the next ranked person from that qualifier?

However it shakes out, I get the feeling that Jeremy Thiel and the CC crew won't be leaving anything behind.

What a great job the '09 Games website people have done to promote this year's athletes! I scanned through the list and recognized at least half the people straight away. I've never met any of them and yet I feel a connection to these people and I am DYING to see how it all plays out in July.

Really really great job drumming up excitement for this year's event guys. Just awesome!

Does anyone know if there will be live web coverage or even possibly TV? Like ESPN the Ocho or something :-)

I believe his wife recently had a child and he decided not to pursue competing this year? Could be wrong, I remember reading it somewhere, maybe OPT's blog.

Just finished watching "Every Second Counts" and I can't wait to see what 2009 brings! I hope they profile a few more of these athletes, because just as 2008 proved, you never know who is going to be standing tall at the end...

It'd be nice for 2010 Games to seed each athlete like in other sports tournaments. That way we can call our bookies. Right now not knowing the events, I'd have to say Speal #1 seed, OPT #2, Everett a close #3, Thiel right behind.

All year long we can update profiles on each athlete's training and offer commentary on strengths vs weaknesses of each player. Especially once we know the events, we can make an educated guess based on their profiles of who will win. Sports and gambling, doesn't get any better than that!

June 19, 2009 6:49 AM

Aren't you forgetting a certain Jason Khalipa ? Anxious to see how he's going to bring it this year.

That's an incredible list, I cannot wait to see the showdown! I predict that many of the well known will be surprised by the outcome - because the events are unknown and because the talent base is so much more intense. I don't want to bet against any of these folks, because so many COULD win depending upon what the blackCFGbox gives birth to ...

I'm more excited to see what these WODs are going to be!!! I can't even pretend to guess the outcome until I see these WODs.

What could be something we've never seen???

What are averages and cutoffs for qualifiers? In other words, what's the ballpark to get an invitation?

Ummm... I think one word can answer your question. The word is "qualifiers".

Who will be replacing the men that cannot make it to the games, it makes sense to send the men from there region who came in a place behind those who are not going????

38. Mark wrote...

Just curious, is it possible to list the qualifying criteria for each individual, such as which regional qualifier and placing they achieved, or which previous games performance earned the invitation? I know if might be common knowledge to some, but it sure would give everyone a quick who's who without paging through all of the regional qualifier results. Thanks. Good luck to all in the games.

Does not look like he even participated at Hells Half acre quals? I guess when "they" determine your 15sec of fame are up, you disappear!!!!

Judging by how he sounded at the end of Every Second Counts, my guess is that he chose not to compete. "They" can't stop someone from showing up at a qualifier and winning if they're the best athlete.
